Fight Bac! - Partnership for Food Safety Education

The Partnership for Food Safety Education's Fight BAC!® was formed in 1997.  It is a public-private coalition dedicated to educating the public about safe food handling to help reduce foodborne illness. Members represent industry, government and consumer groups, as well as alliances with corporate America.

Pathway to Food Safety

This is a tool for store management to train other employees in proper food safety. To assist in this training, the Utah Food Industry Association has a training program "Pathway to Food Safety." For more information, follow this link.

Food Stamp Outreach

According to the Utah State Department of Workforce Services (DWS), the food Stamp Program serves as the first line of defense aginst hunger. In Utah, the Food Stamp Program is administered by DWS. It enables low-income families to buy nutritious food with Electronic Benefit Transter (EBT) cards. However, DWS is concerned with the recently documented decline in Food Stamp participation in 1999, because Food Stamps play a key role in participants successfully moving from welfare to work.

DWS will provide valuable information for families to learn how to apply for Food Stamps. They have flyers, brochures and posters in English and Spanish, at no cost, for retailers to display or distribute. If interested in obtaining materials, call your Association office, (801) 973-9517; or Patricia Swenson at (801) 526-4385.

Fair Labor Standards Act Reminder

The Department of Labor has provided a fact sheet on the child labor provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which they have summarized as being the most frequently cited violations in the grocery industry. Please be aware that the Department of Labor will be targeting these areas when they start their unannounced investigations of 100 grocery stores this spring.

Techniques of Alcohol and Tobacco Management (TATM)

Beer and tobacco are an important part of many convenience and grocery store sales. Customers have come to expect them as part of a store's product line. Yet unlike food, these items are regulated. Selling them is a privilege (not a right) that could be easily lost if even one employee breaks the law! Fines or jail could follow for both employer and employee.

As retailers, we must control illegal sales of both products. That's why your Association has developed Techniques of Alcohol and Tobacco Management (TATM). When applied, the TATM program can go a long way in preventing illegal sales.

The program is a DVD Workshop and CD with supplemental training materials that meet the state training requirements.  It is designed to allow you to do your own in-house training at store level on an as needs basis. For further information, contact Natalie Steed at (801) 973-9517, or e-mail: Natalie Steed.
